Conventional wisdom in business often doesn't match reality. There are plenty of examples in the hotel industry. About 20 years ago, the advent of teleconferencing was thought to be the death knell for the hotel business. Why would anyone travel to meet with a customer when they can see him or her face-to-face on a screen? As we all know, that bit of wisdom never panned out.
